I found
this article interesting. It talks about some of the things dealt with in MMA, Boxing, and Muey Thai. Or really any sport that involves striking.
I found it really interesting that you could inhale your own teeth. I am also extremely interested in how concussions will play into fighters lives later on. Someone on reddit posted about how MMA is not as bad for your brain as boxing or even professional football and in some cases Hockey. Yeah technically this is true, but tricking yourself into thinking that taking punches, kicks, and even knees to the head from elite fighting athletes (even though they train to take those shots) isn't harmful to your body is ridiculous. Its well known that some guys just don't get knocked out or its damn near impossible to knock them out. These guys usually end up with brain damage later on in life from being hit just so many damn times. Then you have the guys that are awesome fighters and are well known for their granite chin, until one day someone knocks them out. Then you notice the next time they lose its by knockout. Sure enough another knockout comes along albeit somewhat easier than the previous. All it takes is one of those lights out to do a little damage to your brain. Now suddenly you go to sleep if the wind blows to hard on your chin. Was that a hummingbird that flew by or did a semi truck just smash into your face? You'll never know at this point.
The medicine for sports like this is really advancing quickly, and I think you will see some significant changes over the next 5-10 years for sports like MMA. Hell they are talking about combining a MMA helmet with a football helmet to try to make it safer for football players. However, one thing is clear, having your brain smash into your skull at high speeds is never EVER good for it.
