I had decided I would start writting this the other day. But its so hard to do on my shitty phone. I missed a few days so I'm going to try to back track as much as possible. I'm not very good at writing, so you will see me switching tenses a lot. Mainly in the days I'm trying to back track on. Forgive me for this.
IMPORTANT: This is not a thread to troll what I say or make fun of me. This will be where I keep my sanity on uneventful days. You can make jokes and everything, but do not try to make joke after joke at my expense. It will make me very unhappy and extremely mad at you. I probably won't get over it as this is a stressful time and am looking for support. Feel free to ask any questions about anything. I wanted to get that out there before somebod said something upsetting.
NOTE: For this and for future reference, I am in Mountain Time, which is 2 hours behind EST.
You can see my Dad's house by clicking here. It is the house with the white Ford F-350, the minivan (I don't know whose that is), and the camper.

Wednesday, January 9:
My flight departed at around 7 am EST. I am feeling very hung over today. Last night I went to dooly's, a local billiards/pub place, to spend my last few hours with all my closest friends. They all were this. I didn't tell anybody, but this made me border-line overwhelmingly happy.
The plan was to just "have a few" at the bar and then go home and finish packing. I showed up to the bar at quarter after 10, and by the time 11:30 hit, I was 2 pitchers down and completely shit faced. We went to Pita Pit at 1:30, and then I got dropped off at home. What a wonderful start to what was soon be my first day in Alberta. I didn't have time to sleep, so I had to finish packing and then wake my mom up to leave. 4 o'clock in the morning. What in the serious fuck was I thinking when I booked my flight for 7:05 in the morning?
Sitting and waiting at my gate was absolute torture. It was so loud, and everybody was on their phone. Who the fuck are you talking to at this hour? The person who dropped you off? They don't want to talk to you! They just saw you! Anyway, I get on the plane beside this cute elderly couple, who is on their way to Kelowna, British Columbia for a skiing trip. They were native to Canada, so I had trouble understanding them at times. They sounded Ukrainian or German, to me. When the flight finally took off, which in reality was right on schedule, it was such a soothing sensation. For some reason, the blasting of the engines gave me a much worse headache, but lulled me right to sleep. I woke up 4 hours later, on the other side of Canada, and feeling significantly better. The pilot made a seamless landing; I barely felt the wheels touch the ground, and my ears didn't pop a single time on the way down.
When I get into the lobby/pick-up area, I remember why I hate flying. There is a wall of people surrounding the doors, waiting to see their beloved family member or friend exiting the airplane. I can't see my family, but who honestly would expect otherwise with this mob of people in my face. I hear my name being shouted out, so I pull out my phone to pretend I'm busy texting somebody something very funny and very important, and I navigate through this maze of people using only the sound my voice being called as reference. I finally find my step-sister, Chaylene, and HOLY SHIT IS SHE EVER PREGNANT. She showed me over to my step-mother and her friend, Shelley and Karen, respectively.
We all hug and say our "Hello's" and Shelly gives me her phone to call my Dad. I find out that he was called into work today and he won't be back for 20 days. This sucks but it's not a big deal. It's not like I'm only visiting for a week. I began to wait for my luggage at the luggage carosoul (wow is that ever wrong spelling and I won't be fixing it). 20 minutes goes by and still, not a single piece of luggage. The 35 minute marker rolls around and the first few pieces start being regurgitated onto the conveyor. I find my luggage and we depart of the car, with my stomach growling right behind us.
I beg and beg Shelley to stop for food, realistically I only mentioned one time that I was pretty hungry, but she is afaid of driving in Calgary so we driving for roughly an hour and stop. We stop at some run down gas station breakfast/lunch place. All the chairs are torn, the floors are dirty, and the waitress is trashy and hot as fuck. I decided I wouldn't hit on the waitress in front of my step-mother and step-sister, so I just figure out what I want to eat. The waitress comes over shortly after I decided and she starts to take our order. I order last because I'm a man and men ask everybody else what they want first. I'm about to order next and she turns to me and says, "What about yourself, handsome?", followed by a little smirk. Fuck this, game on. I start flirting with her in front of everybody; I give zero shits. I had decided, previously, to order the egg special, but she convinced me otherwise and I ordered a western omelette. It was surprisingly delicious, she probably rained love and ladyjuice into it, and I ate every last bite of this massive thing.
We head home and make it into Duchess around 2 o'clock. I spend the rest of the day just relaxing with my family. I set my playstation up and unpack a few of my clothes, but I quickly regret this as I became ridiculously tired and lethargic. Shelley makes us macaroni, hamburger, and spaghetti sauce but it is delicious regardless of how simple it is. I'm no used to having people cook for me. I stay awake as long as I can, but I end up going to sleep at around 8:30.

Thursday, January 10:
Today sucks. Shelley is sick, my step-brother, Tyler, and Chaylene are both working. I have to spend the entire day by myself with nothing to do. I decide to unpack my things and play a little playstation3. I throw on Assassin's Creed 3, but I quickly realize that I don't like playing games by myself anymore. Even when I used to play single player games on my PC, I was talking with all of you the whole time. Today, I just feel alone. Shelley wakes up around 2 and we book my H2S Alive course. This is necessary for me to even be considered for a job on the [oil] rigs. It's like trying to get a factory job without WHMIS, you just can't do it. We book the course for Wednesday, which is depressing because I was hoping to be working before that.
I spent the entire day watching tv and cuddling with the dogs. We have a boxer named Dakota and a dashund/something mix named Dasher. Before they got Dakota, they had some little dog that looked like it ran into the wall all day long, named Leevi. When we used to pet Leevi, Dasher would run up and push Leevi out of the way so you could only pet him. Now that Leevi is passed and Dakota is here, Dakota does this to Dasher. The difference is that Dasher and Leevi were both small dogs, and tha Dakota is anything but small. It's a mix between sad and funny how Dakota treats Dasher. They both love each other and will only sleep next to each other, but Dakota will push Dasher out of the way, he will lay on Dasher's head or sit on Dasher's mid-section. Dasher will be sleeping and Dakota will casually walk over and just sit on his face. The dogs are both pretty cute, when they sleep they stick their tounges out. And Dasher's lip always gets stuck on his tooth so it looks like he's smiling.
Shelley ends up making dinner again. She cooks chicken fettucini, think she called it. I ended up staying awake until 2 a.m., just being a mope and watchin tv. Today really sucked.

Friday, January 11:
Today is going to be a much better day. Shelley is feeling a tiny bit better, and Tyler and Chaylene are both off work today. I don't do anything different from yesterday, but just being around people and not being alone is so much better. I really just want to start working so I can make some money. Today I found out that Dakota likes me most, only second to my Dad. Shelley says it's because I look like my Dad and I am alpha like him. This was strange to hear from my step-mom, but I took the compliment nonetheless.
Leftovers for dinner! This fine by me! This will be the third day in a row that I do not have to cook dinner. I'm really not used to having somebody do everything for me. Well, it's not just for me, it's for everyone. We have a traditional house; my dad works almost all the time, and Shelley cooks, cleans, and takes care of the kids. The kids don't do shit. I think this is where Chaylene gets her stuck up nature from; she thinks everybody owes her something and that the world revolves around her. When she has her baby, she will have an eye-opening like none other. She'll quickly learn that she isn't the most important thing in the world.
Tyler invites me to play billiards with him in Brooks, so Shelley gives us some money to go play. I get my ass kicked up I remain cocky and confident about my skill. I think we played 6 games and I won 1 of them. They were all close games. On our way back I pick up a tin of mint Skoal. I decide that it is better than drinking to help pass the time on the days where I have nothing to do. We get back home and we chill in the garage and shoot the shit of a while. By "a while", I mean 6 hours of talking. We didn't talk about anything in particular, more about everything in general. Police stories, drug stories, drinking stories, fight stories, girls, working on the rigs, lots of stuff. Part-way through one of his stories, I decided to pack a little lip. I haven't chewed in quite some time, so I had extreme head spins, but not in a bad way. I was really high off this stuff; it put my head in the clouds. When I decided to spit it out, I was stilling spinning for almost 15 minutes. I decided to go to bed around 5 o'clock.

Saturday, January 12:
I had set my alarm for 10 o'clock so that I wouldn't sleep in all day. Lucky for me, I woke up at 9:50 and I was completely wide awake. Chaylene has been bugging Shelley, all day long, to borrow her car to me so I can take the two of us to the store to get a few groceries and to get coffee. She ends up giving in and let's me drive. It's a 2012 VW Jetta Comfortline. It's a really nice car but it's not the car for me. When you remove your foot from the gas pedal, the car starts to brake. I don't mean that the friction from the engine slows it down, I mean the car's computer applies the brakes. I'm really not used to this and I don't like it.
When we got back, Tyler spoke to me about the rigs a little more. He showed me one of his old pay checks, which he said was a lower pay than usual. The pay check was for a 2 week period and was for $3100. He told me that when he works, he usually makes $7000 a month. I am going to be making a lot of money. I was looking at some cars on my phone today that are sporty but practical. So far I'm considering a 2008 civic si, a 2008 sentra se-r spec-v, and a new WRX. I'm leaning toward the civic because I'm a honda fanboy, but there's still a lot of time for me to change my mind. Shelley said she will drive me to my shop when I start working, until I can buy myself a car. I think I'll buy a cheaper car at first, just so I can save more money, and then buy a motorcycle in the summer, and then buy the car that I want when I can't ride anymore.
I had previously decided that I would only stay long enough so that I can buy a car and have enough money so that I can go to school and not have to work. Now I'm thinking otherwise. If I work for 20 years here, I will never have to work another day in my life. And if I was to stay in this field, it would just get easier and easier. My dad is a consultant and just watches over the site to make sure everything gets done, and gets done properly, and he makes near $150,000 a year. He is that supervisor guy who doesn't have to do anything. He came out here when he was 30, 16 years ago, and already has everything he needs. I'm 21 and just starting out, I am getting very excited.
Tyler and I went into town around 9 to pick up some pizza for dinner. I now hate Papa John's Pizza. I carried it on my lap and when we got home, the grease had seaped through and left a big grease stain on my dick-holder area. Fuck you Papa John. I almost forgot! This is so important that I'm not going to edit it in above, it has to remain here. On our way to get pizza, we almost fucking died. I say that, and people think I'm exageratting, but we really almost died. He drives a 2008 Hyundai Accent, a tiny ass car. We were driving on the highway, going 130 kph, and he was flipping through the songs on his ipod. I'm sitting there texting my friend in Ontario. I finish my text and look up. There are 4 deer, grouped together, less than 20 feet in front of us, standing only in our lane. 20 feet. Sure, 20 feet is a lot, but not when are going 130 kph towards multiple objects that aren't moving. I yell, he swerves out of instinct. HE DIDN'T EVEN LOOK UP! His reaction was to jerk the wheel, which was enough for us to not plow into these deer. We came, LITERALLY, less than 2 feet from hitting them. If my arm was stuck straight out of my window, my arm would have hit them. It would have totalled his car and there's no saying what would have happened.
We got home, ate some pizza (fuck you Papa John) and then I went to bed around 9.

Sunday, January 13:
I woke up at 6 today. I let the dogs sleep with me last night, but Dakota slept in a weird spot and I ended up moving into some twisted sleeping angle, and woke up with a sore back. I was wide awake when I woke up though. I ate some left over pizza and bread sticks, a banana, and made some coffee. I have spent the rest of my morning writing up to this point. It's taken me almost 2 hours and I feel a whole lot better about everything. I'll report in on the rest of my day tomorrow. It will continue as a new paragraph. By the way, my coffee is cold as fuck now.
I still haven't done anything notable yet. Just watching tv and wasting time until wednesday rolls around. It sucks have nothing to do. I just want to work. Every once in a while I go to town (Brooks) to get groceries or coffee. Aside from that, I don't do anything. Just watching tv with the family. I'm so tired. It's only 8:30, but I'm going to bed soon.

Monday, January 14:
I woke up really early, again today. I was tired at 8:30 yesterday, so I went to bed around 9. I set my alarm for 10 this mornng, but I ended up waking up at 7:30. When I think about it, I slept for 10 1/2 hours; but in my head, it seems like it was an unusually short sleep. I've been waking up wide awake and very well rested. Today is no exception.
I got up, made some coffee, made some oatmeal, ate a banana, and then Shelley invited me to keep her company while she dropped Chaylene off at her pregnancy check-up. When she finished, she played the sound of her little Jaylynn's (I know, trailer trash name) heart beat. Honestly, it sounded like a normal heart beat except kind of hollow. We got coffee and headed back home.
Shelley and Chaylene watched tv most of the day, as they are both sick now. Tyler and I chilled in the garage and looked up cars and watched youtube on his laptop. We spent most of the day just relaxing. Later in the evening, we decided to play some poker and card games, while drinking a bunch of beer. I became intoxicated. On more unfortunate news, I've taken up smoking and chewing. While drunk, I decided, "I should go pack a lip." I did so. I packed the biggest lip I ever have, this is what I do when I'm drunk. Roughly 10 minutes later, I was white as a ghost and wanted to throwup. I didn't throwup, and the sickness went away. I kept drinking. Tyler and I shared sex stories, fight stories, and drug stories again. I also gave him a little theory lesson on how to powerslide/drift in the snow better, in a FWD car. After our drinking party, I became hungry. We ate BBQ Tuna and crackers. Weird? Very. Delicious? Quite.

Tuesday, January 15:
Today was another boring day. I didn't even go into town today. Tyler and I chilled in the garage for most of the day, again. We watched an episode of "Licensed to Drill" that his friend was in. I now smoke and chew to pass the time. The only thing exciting about today is that tomorrow I get to write my H2S Alive certification. I'm not really sure how long it will take, but I'm excited to be able to start work.

Wednesday, January 16:
I did my H2S Alive course! I'm certified now! Woooh! I gt a 98% on it! I only got one question wrong on the test! I can finally work!!! I'm too excited for this right now, so I'll add more details in a bit. Fuck Yeah!

yes, I really enjoyed reading this. I am glad you made it there safely, and that everything is okay. I would say be careful lol, but it sounds like you understand after the deer incident. We miss you already. Its quieter without you here. Jobs like that can set you for life. Lots of times the jobs suck.....suck in a way that they are hard jobs and take lots of time. Good money though. I hope you can tough it out and make something out of it.

p.s. Fuck Papa John.

Added Sunday, January 13 and Monday, January 14. Will add Tuesday and Wednesday on Wednesday night, after I take my H2S course.

ADDITION: Please comment when you read these. If you enjoy reading it, I will add more detail. If nobody is reading it, I will just make it vague and be a journal for me. I enjoy writing my stories in more detail, but only ifpeople enjoy reading it. Also, commenting helps me to focus on what everyone wants to hear about, because I HIGHLY doubt you want to hear that I spent the day watching TV on the couch.

Hey everyone! My schedule is way more hectic than I thought it would be. I've worked 135 hrs in the last two weeks. That's what I'll be getting paid for. Will be a very nice paycheck.

I'll give you all a little update on what's been going on with me:
I experienced my first 'kick back'. This means oil was spraying out of the well into the air. It was chaotic and a pain in the ass to clean it up. I was the only one anywhere near it and I was just putting my tools away and all of a sudden I hear a hissing noise. I turn around to see what it is and there's oil spraying 50 feet in the air (not an exaggeration. It went half way to the top of the derrick). I screamed and panicked and yelled for help. They taught me to put this really heavy valve on top of the pipe if this ever happens. This thing is so heavy that I can barely pick it up to my shoulder. I'm talking putting 100% effort into lifting this thing and I can just BARELY do it. So I get it on my shoulder to shut the well in, look over at where I have to put it... The pipe is 30 feet in the air. WTF. So I'm literally standing there with this 200+ lb valve on my shoulder, waiting for somebody to come help me. I have no idea how to operate the elevator. And it's not like its labelled. There are a bunch of black levers all equally sized and equally spaced which just do different things. So the rig operator gets there and lowers the pipe so I can put the stabbing valve in it. Somebody helps me screw it in and then we shut the well. What a mess. I was completely covered head to toe in oil. I literally had to use cleaners to clean the shower when I washed off when I got home.

A few days later, this happened again but much less extreme. We were pulling rods outs when it happened. So it works like this, there's the hole in the ground that somebody drills, then they put casing inside of it which is a 4 1/2" pipe usually, then we put pipe inside which is 2 3/8", 2 7/8" or 3 1/2". Then we put rods inside of that which are either 3/4", 7/8" or 1". When you see those oil pumps going up and down, that is pumping the rods. The rods get pushed down the pipe which makes oil go up the casing and into something that collects it. So we're pulling rods out and oil is spraying in one direction, the direction of my rig. This means I'll be scrubbing it clean again. But I didn't know what to do this time so I just watched as everybody else panicked. What I was supposed to do was turn these little screws that tighten everything in so oil can't come out anymore. There was two, one on my side, and one on the side the oil was spraying on. One person ran to the spraying side and got drenched in oil. On his face, in his mouth, in his eyes, in his ears. It was a mess.

Now a really bad story. I almost killed my derrickhand. It was an accident and I'm still shaken up by it. We were pulling 2 7/8" pipe out and I was making a stack of it. This shit isn't light. I can't lift it by myself. I can't even lift 2 3/8" pipe by myself. It's always somewhere between 9.8 meters and 10.2 meters. I know this because we have to measure them when we put them back in. So picture a 10 meter pipe being pulled straight up into the air, and then I grab the bottom end and walk it away as it comes down. So i had to walk out straight and then turn left. If I just walked across where I was supposed to go to, the pipe would hit the railing. I did this a few times when I wasn't thinking. But this time in particular, my derrickhand happened to be standing in front of the railing. So, I'm walking so that the other end of this pipe is going to hit him into the railing, which would just suck for him but he'd be fine normally. But the pipe was a bit lower. For a frame of reference, these pipes I'm tailing weigh about 300 lbs, the elevator weighs about a 100 lbs, the bale's weigh about 500 lbs, and the blocks weigh about 800 lbs. This didn't all hit him, but because I walked on an angle with the pipe, all of this stuff got pulled in that direction. So all of this weight was pulling this 300 lbs pipe into him when he was already squished against the railing. They yelled to me, I ran back so it would be off him, finished what I was doing, and "went to take a shit". I sat in the bathroom fucking hysterical. Never in my life have I ever came so close to killing somebody by accident directly from a mistake I made. I'm still rattled by it. I pay so much more attention to what I'm doing now. My boss told me it wasn't my fault because the rig operator should have seen that I wasn't watching and stopped coming down so that it wouldn't happen but he was just staring up at the blocks. I'll draw a picture on paint to explain what everything is so it makes more sense. But yeah, I got drunk that night. I woke up in my bosses bathroom completely naked and I had locked and barricaded the bathroom door with everything in the bathroom. I don't know what happened. I had my clothes all piled in the corner. Weird shit.

Good news!: I've registered at Athabasca University in Northern Alberta. They have a lot of online programs. For this first time that I've seen, I can get a legitimate bachelor degree from online courses, that employers will accept. I have to go to the bank before I can register for courses because my credit card limit is $500 and it's $660 for the first course I'm going to do, which will be Introduction to Web Programming. I'm working towards a BSc but I need a few random courses as well so I figured why not start with this, I enjoy computer things so it won't be that boring. Here is that program I'm taking and this is the list of courses I need. It's kind of confusing how they did the layout for which courses to take, but I figured it out so I'm sure everybody else can too.

man, I remember I worked in oil and gas wells. that shit is really dangerous. I almost got the top of my head taken off by a bobcat (little dozer machine). I also so many 4 wheeler and dirt bike racers get killed riding up on the mountain around all of us doing construction.

There was a story told to me by my cousin about an incident that happened to him while working in that business. He came up onto a gas well site. It was probably 40 yards by 40 yards. So it wasn't really that big. They were fracking at this point if I remember correctly. They had all their pick ups and the frack trucks on the site, barely any room to do anything else but walk around all the vehicles. Well, something happened and I don't know if they ever found out what but the hole they dug exploded. They had already put 200-300 feet of casing in the hole. That shit blew out of the whole and flew so high into the air those 10 foot pieces looked like tiny tooth picks in the air. Then as the shit broke apart in the air it began raining metal death down from the sky. Everyone started running diving under pick up trucks, and dozers like any of that was gonna stop a 10 ft 2inch piece of steel pipe falling from hundreds of feet in the air. They started landing all over the mountain. They pierced through trucks and dozers like they were butter. All in all no one was even injured. It was fucking amazing.

I can tell you though, after I had my first close call, it just became second nature to make sure you and everyone around you is completely safe. I hope nothing else happens, and you and everyone you work with stays healthy. Good luck, keep your eyes open.

Yeah, I've heard stories about what I think caused the explosion. I can't remember what its called. It's a liquid, it starts with a "C", its natural and is just in the well sometimes, and is extremely explosive. I heard two stories. This one is funny because nobody got hurt. They knew the well they were working on had it so they were being careful, but the roughneck went to go on break and he had some on his coveralls so when he opened the door to get into the trailer, it brushed against him causing the liquid to explode and sending him flying 20 feet backwards. He got up and they all laughed it off. The other story is not nice. Everything was covered in this stuff, somebody made a phone call, boom. The entire lease exploded and everyone died. This is like a 500x500 foot area with 10-15 people on it. That story freaked me out.
