The French cabinet has approved a draft law to ban the wearing of full-face veils in public spaces, opening the way for the text to go before parliament in July.

[...]

Addressing the cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, said: "Citizenship should be experienced with an uncovered face.

"There can be no other solution but a ban in all public places."

Wow, that seems pretty ridiculous. I personally don't think that wearing clothing should EVER be a crime. It hurts absolutely NO ONE. If it makes somebody uncomfortable or scared like a baby to see somebody wearing a veil, then maybe THEY should stay inside in the safety of their own home, instead of forcing people to remove their clothing when they go out into public.

I found a link to another related article (an opinion piece actually) that had this to say
Quote:
Discrimination of any form is considered unacceptable is all civilised societies.

The burqa or the niqab does just that. It allows one person to remain anonymous during face-to-face communication, thus depriving the right of the other to reciprocate whilst registering the changes in facial expressions, which is vital in such communication, in conjunction to voice that is used for everyday communication.
That is probably one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. How is wearing a burqa discrimination? It's not like they're forcing you to NOT wear one! That would be only possible way it could possibly be depriving people of something. And if I don't want to participate in a conversation where I can't see the person's facial expression, it's clearly my right to just not talk to them! I shouldn't be able to force them to take off their burqa just because it makes me uncomfortable that I can't see their face during a conversation.

Well, that's just my opinion on the subject anyway.

Well, as a private business owner, I should be able to make any sort of rules that people have to follow if they enter my private business establishment. Heck, I should be able to make a rule that says women aren't allowed in my store if I so desire. It would be pretty lame, but I own the property - I should have a say in that.

But nobody has to talk to anybody else in public.

yea in public i understand that they dont have to talk to anyone
the business "issue" is basically in my opinion the only good enough reason they would want it
but then again its like you said
if its a privately owned business and you do have a say in it

I think its completely ridiculous that a government is deciding what its people can and can not wear. If we are talking about a private establishment, then this is a completely different story. However, to say that I can't walk around with giant holes in my jeans because some people don't want to see my legs or possible a slip of my underwear is retarded. No one is forcing anyone to look at me. They are looking and can't look away because they are shocked. Therefor their own fucking stupidity is FORCING them to keep looking thus disgusting them. I bet 100 bucks RIGHT NOW within 2 weeks of that law going into effect muslims will riot in France again, and frankly I don't blame them. They should riot and they should do it all the way to the government buildings where they drag the people out into the street that proposed and passed this law and make an example of them. The people should not have to be oppressed by their government. It is in place to protect its people, not scrutinize their every aspect of life.

dadas brought up an interesting point earlier. There is an aspect of alienation. There have been some pretty severe riots within the islamic community, so a ban like this would perhaps persuade many of the muslims to leave the country, and persuade many potential immigrants that they would actually rather go to some other country instead. Making a law like this would eventually just make it to where it is just too uncomfortable to live in France as a muslim, thus solving the French White Man's problems.
