During Hurricane Sandy (which devastated my town {had no power for 2 weeks and a tree went into my neighbor's house}) I only had Monopoly and Trouble. Any other cool board game ideas?

King of Tokyo is currently my favourite board game to play with some friends. Ticket to Ride is also a great time.

I have heard that Settlers of Catan is fantastic.

The most fun I have had with tabletops was playing a series of games called "CheapAss Games". They are games made out of recycled materials and paper clippings.

Ok all of these are games I own and love to play. Check them out:

- CHESS - my all time favorite game period for its endless strategy and tactics and elimination of luck.... Pure skill. Of course this game needs no introduction but i wouldn't feel right not including it. I don't really consider it a board game either.

- GUILLOTINE - a card game that is reasonably easy to learn, has a ton of strategy but also luck (anyone can play) only takes about 45 mins to play on average. Also only costs about $15. 2-5 players.

- PIT - wild stock trading card game that includes a lot of yelling and the ringing of a bell. Do not play while kids are sleeping. 4-8 players.

- LOOT - a trump style card game involving pirate ships. Simple but fun. 2-6 players.

- STOP THIEF - possibly my all time favorite board game for its uniqueness and coolness. I believe it was made in the 80s. It is no longer manufactured and sold. You will have to use eBay to get a copy. It uses an electronic crime scanner to give aural clues about the thief's location. Each player acts as a detective and tries to catch the thieves before the other detectives. If you find a copy of this game, make sure that the electronic crime scanner works properly.... If it's broken, you have no game. 2-4 players. Average game lasts about 60 to 90 minutes.

- ACQUIRE - probably one of my top 2 favorite board games along with Stop Thief. Also an older game, made in the 50s or 60s. I believe they re-produced this game within the last decade or so, however the board is not nearly as nice to use as in the older version. Again, I suggest going on eBay to find one of the early copies of this game. This is a hotel merging and acquisitions tile style game. Plenty of room for strategy and skill with a moderate learning curve. I have yet to meet a person who didn't like this game once they played it a few times. 3-6 players. Average game prob lasts about 2.5 hours but it is heavily dependent on how many new or experienced players you have.

- MASTERPIECE - a fun board game where you auction off famous pieces of art. Easy to learn and gameplay only takes about 45-60 minutes. A good amount of luck with a little bit of skill. Warning: poker face required when you are attempting to sell a forgery! For all ages and personalities. 3-6 players.

- STRATEGO - military themed 2 player strategy game. This is a game of subtle maneuvering and positioning where you attempt to find your opponents flag while eliminating their high ranking officers. Skill and memory based, very little luck involved in this one. Gameplay takes 30-60 minutes.

- SETTLERS OF CATAN - a fun strategy game of building, accomplishing objectives and trying to out-maneuver your opponents. Moderate learning curve with a fair amount of skill involved. 2-4 players although there are expansions available if you want to play with more people. Average game lasts 2-3 hours.

- PAYDAY - light-hearted game where you try to make it through each month so you can get paid. But to get through the month, you're going to have to check mail, pay bills and make deals looking for a profit. You will also encounter fun little mini-contests as you go. Lots of luck and anyone can sit and learn to play quickly. 2-4 players, average game lasts 60 minutes.

- TABOO - very similar to "The $25,000 Pyramid" as seen on TV with Dick Clark. You play partners or teams and try to get your team/partner to guess the key word without saying 5 related words on the card in front of you. 4 players minimum, no max. Game time is determined by prior agreement and you can play until one team reaches a pre-determined number of points.

- CRANIUM - great as a couples game or with family who don't want to learn a more "serious" game. There are 4 different categories of challenges you will have to face which include: spelling, sculpting, humming, pantomimes, drawing, blind-drawing and much more. Very interactive and a little crazy. Can be a little loud. 4 players minimum, no max. Average game is about 2 hours. There is also a Turbo Edition which adds to the craziness and variety of activities.

- RISK - All time classic which probably needs no introduction. Game of world domination. Quite a bit of strategy involved. Games can run a little long. 4-6 players recommended. Average game 3-6 hours.

- PERUDO - A strategy dice game of skill which involves bluffing and educated guessing. You may have heard of a game called "liar's dice" which I believe is similar if not the same. The only components to the game are normal 6-sided dice. You need 5 of each color/style. It's best to just build your own set by purchasing different patterns/colors that you like. One of my favorite overall games and I highly recommend it. Simple yet fun and addicting. Minimum 2 players, no max. Game time directly correlates to the number of players playing. Rules are simple and I'd be happy to explain them to anyone interested in learning.
