Hey, I am kinda interested in setting up and making my own in home server to run some things on and have a few questions.

1. What kind of hardware do i need to run a tekkit minecraft server and maybe a csgo server? do i even need to make a dedicated machine?

2. if i have marginal internet speeds will that effect the quality of my servers?

3. i know building a pc saves money but is it worth building your own server? i want to experience building one but if i can save money by just buying one i might do that.

thanks, and i will probably have more questions as time goes on.

Memory is most important for player count. 2GB for 10 players to be smooth. Any old computer would work(64bit CPU), but learning to install and use linux would be the best as the java performance is way better than windows.

so what I've picked up on is its almost like building a computer but for a different purpose. unfortunately don't have a spare computer to run it on, i have a macbook pro that i think we are selling soon but thats it. could i go with this and go from there? (it only has one drive bay but i think thats enough when i only want to run 1-2 servers)

That is an expensive case. "Servers" are only small for when they go into datacenters and they need to fit as many as possible into a confined space.

You can use any case, any decent PSU, any decent motherboard, etc. It is literally just a PC that you use for "Serving" which could be doing anything.

For just a minecraft server, I would just buy an offlease Dell/Lenovo desktop with a decent chunk of memory or a refurb.

If you are going to build some, build yourself a gaming PC and use your current machine as a server.

alright thanks for the info, and for the gaming PC i have one. thats the one i use to play steam and other stuff. The macbook pro is my moms old laptop that she is thinking of selling so i don't want to make plans on using it. Ill think ill either try to find an old desktop or laptop for cheap and use that, like you suggested.

If your mom is selling her macbook, buy it from her and that will be your cheapest option for a server that can run minecraft.
