With Microsoft dropping the ball with the effectiveness of the Security Essentials software, many people are looking for a better free solution.

AV-Comparatives does several tests every few months on the most common AV solutions. Here are the most recent results. I am really shocked that Avast and AVG are so low now, as they used to be the go-to AV solutions for the educated PC users.

Recommendations based on resource usage and protection:
BitDefender Free
Avira Free

Remember:
Any protection is better than no protection.

Having and using secondary scanning tool like SuperAntiSpyware or MalwareBytes is very important.

Use a secure, often updated web browser with Ad Block Plus. Avoid Internet Explorer.

The best protection is intelligence, skepticism and paranoia.

I'm going to go ahead and switch off MSE then.

I just installed Avira Free to test it out. So far it's okay, fairly comprehensive for a free solution. I can easily turn off real-time protection while gaming, and so far there are no annoying messages telling me to buy the full version.

sophos is the best anti virus I have ever seen. It uses so little resources and it catches everything. It caught the FBI virus, the internet explorer bug that was happening a little while back, and he catches every spoof anti virus program I have seen so far. Staples is the only place that sells it besides their own website. I have a copy I should install it. They remotely connect to your computer if something gets by and they remove it or they come to your house within 24 hours.

I don't trust you. I don't need any anti virus or spy/mal/bloatware protection. BRB, downloading porn with limewire.

But seriously, what about MSE? I don't get how they can go from the best free antivirus, to being complete shit in 1-2 years :(

1. It is the most widely used so malware programmers specifically make software to avoid it.

2. Completely dropped XP support & updates.

3. Budget being placed elsewhere.
