Ok, I need to buy a new router. Mine is on its last leg and is causing me to get loss and choke in game.

Serial has already helped me out with some info to get me pointed in the right direction, but I would like some specific input before I make a purchase.

My current old router is a Linksys "G" router and is about 6-7 years old.

Serial told me that the newest routers are "AC" routers which are quite expensive and bundled with a bunch of stuff I prob wouldn't use or need. So i am looking at purchasing a high quality "N" router.

Here are my needs: I want the best connection possible to play CSGO with. My computer is hard wired through the router/modem so I do not play over a wireless signal. Also, I would like it to have decent capability for my wife to stream movies to her iPad over the wireless.

I believe Serial told me that Netgear and Asus are good brands and to avoid Linksys (that they have gone down in quality). I found 2 ASUS "N" routers on Amazon that have good reviews. One is a 900 and one is a 600. They are linked below. Can someone explain the differences between the 900 and 600 models and tell me if i need the 900 given my needs above (I'd rather save the extra $45 if I don't need the more expensive one).

Also, if you have any other thoughts/suggestions, please chime in.

Thanks!

The 900 has a better network speed. You'll want to get this one if your wife ever does things online like streaming Netflix or other high use things while you're playing, or if you're interested in future proofing your purchase. (The 900 is probably dual band, which is a more modern technology.) Go with the 600 if you just want something that will work for now.

They are both dual band. My wife is interested in streaming over Netflix, but it would be fairly rare for her to be doing that at the same time I am playing CSGO. So her streaming could affect my signal even though I'm hard wired through the router, correct? What do you mean exactly by future proofing my purchase? I don't want to buy something I'll have to replace in a year or 2, I'd rather buy something I can confidently use for 5 years (if that's possible these days). Thanks for the help.

Oh if they're both dual band you should just get the 600. They'll probably both last the same time.

yeah, I wouldn't spend more than you need. you can easily spend too much and never even utilize what that money got you.
