Does anybody remember playing Freedom! when they were in school? It was this Apple II game where you were this slave kid from the South, and you had to escape. You chose when to leave (spring, summer, fall, winter), whether to sleep during the day or at night, whether to get help from people, etc. You had to steal food from people's gardens to try to survive, and had to dodge the white people's dogs and horses as they went looking for you.

For some reason my school had this game even though it was very controversial and was pulled off the market in 1993 (ie, when I was six, before I even started going to school). I always thought it was a really fun game, and I wonder who else played it.

Yeah, it was very similar to the Oregon trail. I wouldn't call it racist, though - it was merely a simplification of what actually happened. I guess maybe it's racist to make it into a game instead of somberly reflecting on it...?

Why is it autonatically assumed that the slaves stole to live. They were actually aided in escape and given jobs above the mason dixon line.

Yeah, in a lot of cases, that was true. I think the point of the game though was to let people about all of the hardships the escaped slaves had to overcome in order to escape, so they had to go with the worst case scenario.

It might be one hell of a find. I tried my source and nothing came up of the sort. And the word "Freedom" is so ambiguous that you'll most likely have to go through page after page if you're looking for this.
