I recently started playing Rocket League (Thanks Kami!) and found out that it was much more difficult to control than other racing games. It was strange for me to be using WASD+Mouse even though the mouse did absolutely nothing. This morning, I started experimenting with other keyboard settings and found one that I think is really easy to control.

I only changed a few things, but here they are:
  • Movement keys changes from WASD to the four arrow keys
  • Jump changed to CTRL
  • Boost changed to LShift
  • Slide changed to Spacebar
  • Camera changed to C
I experimented with having the air strafe keys being the arrow keys as well, but I eventually settled on keeping WASD as my air movement keys, because I have a habit in racing games to just keep UPArrow pressed, and it was causing me to do all sorts of unnecessary flips in the air. This setup is very natural to me because spacebar is always brake in racing games, you have to brake to drift in racing games; control is always jump in the DOS platformers I used to play, and Shift is often run in other games. I know a few people were saying the game was hard to control without a controller - These keys make the game much easier for me to control.

Apparently the little air somersaults don't work if you have different air directional keys and ground directional keys, so I had to change my air keys to the arrows again.

I changed my FOV and my camera distance. I can see much more.

I tried this and its fantastic. FOV and camera distance are 110 and 300

OMG. I didn't know you could do this. I'm going to be all over it - I'm used to overlays that make my character/vehicles look like ants so I can see the whole field.

Current FOV: 110. Current camera distance: 300. I may increase the camera distance though.

Fuck it. The way this game handles input from a keyboard is broken. I hope the developers fix it eventually, but for now I'll have to use a controller.

Protip: you can go as fast backwords as you can forwards by somersaulting.

I think you just go the exact same speed forwards as backwards, whether or not you somersault.

YOU CANNOT USE BOOST WHILE GOING BACKWARDS, it WILL stop you and try to make you go forwards.

I honestly don't use boost all that much anymore. I only use it when I specifically need it. Somersaulting is a quicker and cheaper way of moving fast.

I actually saw people backflipping, and as soon as they were facing backwards they rocket boosted to go in that direction. As they got to the goal, they would just flip back foward and stop. This allowed them to essentially rocket boost backwards.

I really recommend everyone put the camera/FOV and the other setting I can't remember to the maximum distance. I did it last night, and now I can keep it in normal view (non-ball view) and see the ball in the air. This has given me super accurate volley/air hitting. I'm still not great at it, but this as been a tremendous help since I don't feel like I'm blind half the game.

I'd like to bump this thread since we have some members who currently play with keyboard very successfully. If you have anything other than default, what do you have?

I use default and I really think they are fine. Maybe its because I had no other option other than keyboard so it forced me to learn it.
As far as I can tell the only thing controllers are better at in rocket league is freestyle aerials. Other than that its just personal preference.

Yeah, I can't get an aerial to save my life with a keyboard. The fact that "forward" and "go" are the same key really fucks me up.
