First. The best security is intelligence. Be a smart user, be skeptical, assume that all clickables can be dangerous.

Second. Microsoft Security Essentials is not capable of todays real-world protection requirements. As you will see in the graphs below, it ranks the lowest of all product options.

Third. At minimum use Ad-blocking extensions for your browser. ublock origin and Disconnect. AdBlock or ABP are no longer considered secure. ublock (non origin) should also not be used as it is essentially a stolen project.

Fourth. Paid products and free products are both equally capable of providing adequate protection. I highly suggest that you do not buy "Premium" versions of software. Just avoid the free products that tend to annoy you in some way.

Fifth. VPNs, without one you can assume that any and all network traffic is being logged and monitored. https://zenmate.com/free-vpn/

Now to the most recent relevant results.

File Detection (Scanning)
Image

As you can see MSE is TERRIBLE. Not even comparable to any single tested product. Most products besides Trend Micro do well here.

Real Time Threats
Image

Again, MSE is abysmal but so are many other solutions here. I would personally not be happy with anything below 99%.

False Positives
Image

This is more of an annoyance, but the uninitiated user may end up quarantining files they will need.

Performance Impact
Image

All solutions seem to effect they system in similar ways. While some minmaxers might care, I consider these results almost insignificant.

My Recommendation

System Cleaning: CCleaner. Also great for uninstalling, removing programs from startup, actually cleaning the registry properly, and can legitimately "wipe" free space from your hard drive(overwrites deleted files). I suggest doing a system clean before scanning to reduce the scan-time.

Real-Time: BitDefender

Secondary Scanner: MalwareBytes Free (Not the Free trial of the Premium -DO NOT ACCEPT THE TRIAL)

Last Resort: ComboFix

The sad thing is my parents still prefer and would prefer trend micro over anything. They use it to moderate what individuals on the house can see.

Little do they know they didn't follow through all the correct activation steps and it doesn't effect me in any way.

You are an adult though, how can they monitor you? Aren't you 18?

I'm 18. "We still pay for your internet and X and Y and Z. You will have this on your computer as long as you live in this house."

Joke is on them, I broke the program.

Isn't really a need for real-time antivirus as you have to manually install everything. Just read reviews and avoid installing from unknown sources.

Browsing: Firefox Mobile + Ublock Origin

Set Youtube links to use Firefox instead of Youtube App(For no Ads).

For Reddit I use RedReader because its Open Source and ad free. I don't have a reddit account so i have no idea how good it is for voting/commenting.

I honestly don't know. I had avast mobile a long while back and it *worked* but I could have not faced any threats anyway.

Side note: my desktop does not have any active anti virus other than MSE. I'm fairly sure I have malware bytes, but I haven't used it recently. No viruses anyway because common sense is 100* more effective than an antivirus.

I run both. AFAIK it won't make you stop using spybot.

Use bitdefender for Real-Time and spybot as a periodic scanner.

I really want to get the cracked or even paid version of malwarebytes. I still haven't used something with that level of real time protection before. I am using bit defender now but I haven't really gone to shady places and clicked things to test it.

I use the free malwarebytes and it works fine.

The free doesn't have real time scanning though does it, if so that's new.

So... TIL that Bitdefender can quarantine files and then refuse to allow me to unquarantine them if they are deemed "too dangerous". Maybe I will go back to Avast?

I hate the fact that some programs don't even let the owner of the system to do things like that. I understand some people are not computer-literate as others but still...

I own you. I can break you. I give you life. You better obey me when I ask you to restore files.

That being said, there seems to be methods online for retrieving quarantined files. Still some hoops to own your own system though...

Yeah, I was reading through that thread before I uninstalled. That's absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable. I'm just going to use another program instead.
