A thread exactly like /r/TIL except on our forums! yayyyy!

Post interesting things that you've learned that you think others will enjoy or benefit from.

TIL:
The definition of "sonder":
From "The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows", "the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk."

What "L'appel du vide" a.k.a. "The Call of the Void" is:
From Urban Dictionary, "L'appel du vide is that tiny voice that tells you to jerk the steering wheel just to the right and take a flying leap off the ledge...that inclination to walk right into the ocean and never return...the call of the Siren song."

TIL... That pretending you don't know people to mindfuck them is actually a thing. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaslighting

It's more than just pretending you don't know people. It's completely undermining a fundamental part of their knowledge about the world.

TIL That the obesity rates in american states, are inversely correspond to the cost of living in each state. This is true for almost every state, with the exception of Idaho, Florida, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Utah; all of which are almost average in both obesity and cost of living.

TIL what "redshift" is. BBC explains redshift as light from more distant objects showing up on earth more red than when it left its source. This is because of the Doppler Effect which acts to stretch or compress waves of moving objects. An example of this is an approaching emergency vehicle siren. As it is getting closer, it sounds higher pitched; as it is getting farther, it sounds lower pitched. In light, approaching objects appear more blue, and receding objects appear more red. The expansion of the Universe is accelerating, so in general, more distant objects are moving away from us (and each other, and everything else) more quickly than nearer ones.

TIL That there are more than 800 known exoplanets, a rocky planet with an atmosphere circling a Sun-like star in the habitable zone.
(Same link as above)

EDIT: Fixed pictures
EDIT2: Added redshift
EDIT3: Added exoplanets
