No I won;t post overrated "pop" guitarists like Slash, Buckethead or Zakk Wylde. They don't even rank close to the top 10. Perfecting one style(usually shredding/which is actually fast scales over and over) doesn't make you an all-time great. I will argue with you on vent if you really want to. You will lose.
First, Steve Vai's protege in training. If you don't know who Vai is kill yourself. Also boobs.

Paul Gilbert (Mr.Big)

John Petrucci (Dream Theater)

Steve Vai himself, mind the facial expressions.

The master of every style ever created Joe Satriani(Chickenfoot), teacher of Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett, aka Saint Joe.

You don't think Steve Vai is overrated pop guitar? He is like the most commonly mentioned "good" guitarist in existence... I'm not saying he isn't everything people say he is, but it was weird for you to juxtapose him next to your insistence on not posting pop guitarists.

I mean pop as in normal mainstream genres of music, instead of technical guitar virtuoso albums like those I've posted.
I have never heard Vai being mentioned in normal musical conversation and most people can't name a single song(If they do its always For the love of God). Most people only know him from Frank Zappa's band which was never pop music, even though he is very known and respected. His short stint in Whitesnake may count as pop, but he still was under developed as an artist then. As a solo artist, none of Vais albums have broken the top 200 except Passion and Warfare. Which is his only album to go Gold.
As for being overrated, that you mean he is appreciated more than he deserves based on his skill. I am not sure if he has ever been rated as high as Slash or people like Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Most top 10s completely overlook him even though his technical proficiency is almost unmatched by anyone. He can easily out-play 99% of all guitarists.
Slash is considered one of the best and I know the younger crowd consider him their generations Hendrix. He has one style, one genre of music, but he wears a hat and looks cool so hes the best now? He is good at what he does but hew is nowhere near as good as people make him out to be. Same with Wylde, he shreds simple scales quickly, much like every other shredding metal player. Yet he was in really popular bands so kiddies label him amazing.
Edit: Perhaps Vai actually being a redditor and doing an AMA has made him more popular in recent years, or has allowed more people to discover him on the internets.
Good list. I don't think Buckethead is overrated. Eric Johnson can probably be included in with those guys as well. How do you feel about Alex Skolnick? Tom Morello?

I know most of you would hate this kind of music, but I admire a lot out people out there because for the fact half the shit that's played blows my mind and I wish I had half the skill they had, but anyway this guy name JB (Green Guitar) really knows how to pull some sick stuff together.
I like practically every kind of metal but for some reason I just can't get into metalcore. Death metal doesn't bother me so much but still I can usually only listen for short periods at a time.
Back to Eric Johnson. I always considered him to be one of the big 3 in the 80s along with Satch and Vai. Yes, this is probably the only song that most people have even heard by him but it's probably my favorite guitar instrumental ever.

Zappa was an amazing guitarist and Dweezil isn't half bad himself. As for Eric Johnson, he is one of my favourites. I just picked a small selection. Guthrie Govan, John 5, Dave Wiener(lol), Tony McAlpine, Steve Morse, Rik Emmett are all fantastic. Even the youtube lesser knows like Mike Poss, Mattrach, Sungha Jung. I only have heard Alex Skolnick in Savatage. I wasn't a fan of the genre, so I can't really give a valid opinion. He is a pupil of Satch so I am sure he has the skillset. I will add him to the ever growing list. Tom Morello is underrated as a total musician and an audio technician. He uses his guitar as a tool more than an instrument. His playing is decent, but doesn't have the technique that others do(In my opinion). That said, I am not a huge Rage or Audioslave fan and have never sought out any other work of his.
My gripe with Buckethead is that he is a great shredder who uses a gimmick to place himself in peoples mind. However many guys like Alexei Laiho, Rusty Cooley, and dare I say Herman Li(Oh no I didn't!) are just as good...if not better. He is the Lady Gaga of guitar players. Fuck Axl Rose too.
